Top Public Speaking Tips

Top Public Speaking Tips
  1. What’s your core message? Know what message you want to deliver. Be able to sum up what you want your audience to take away in one short sentence. Do you want to inform, persuade, motivate or entertain your audience?
  2. Have a clear beginning, middle and end: A good structure helps you remember what you want to say and assists your audience in understanding your message.
Opening – A strong start really helps grab your audience’s attention. Issue a challenge, make a joke, give a quote, ask a question….something to hook them in.
Body - Making three key points is seen as the optimum communication.
Conclusion – Finish confidently, with conviction – a call to action, a challenge, a strong summary or a question. An audience remembers best what it hears last.
  3. Eye contact: Making eye contact with individual members of the audience creates a great connection between you and your audience. Looking at their foreheads is good enough!
  4. The power of the pause: A pause can add great impact. It gives your audience time to digest what you’ve said, and it gives you time to breathe, to gather your thoughts, check your audience remains engaged and time to change your tone or emphasis.
  5. Be yourself - speak from the heart, with energy and enthusiasm: Show your conviction. Be clear about your message and communicate it fully. Think about your audience and what interests them. Remember to include personal stories and anecdotes relevant to your topic. Communication is all about connecting and sharing.
  6. Be animated, use your voice and your body: Clear, relevant gestures and vocal variety (changes in pitch, pace, pause and volume) enhance your performance. A smile captivates and relaxes your audience.
  7. Use rhetorical devices: Consider including repetition, rhetorical questions, alliteration & the power of three eg she was fit, fun and fifty!
  8. Language: Use words & phrases that create strong visual images. Speak with precision and develop an awareness of filler words like “um; er, sort of, you know”, and avoid them.
  9. Keep to Time - Know your time limit and don’t overrun: Deliver your talk, receive your applause and then sit down. Best to leave your audience wanting more.
  10. Practise, Practise and Practise: Try out your speech in front of friends, family, in your head and even at home in front of a mirror. Invite feedback. Make your speech as fluent as possible. Experience is everything – so say "YES!" to every speaking opportunity.
